Enlarged Prostate FAQs
Enlarged Prostate FAQs in Brooklyn and Queens
Pain and disturbance in urination? Suspect that you may have prostate problems? According to the National Ambulatory Medical Care Survey, one in every two men over age of 50 suffers from an enlarged prostate, and at age 75, about 80%% of men suffer from this condition. Are you a part of this disturbing statistic? The answer can only be given by a qualified specialist.
Below, award-winning physicians Dr. Vitaly Raykhman and Dr. Yuly Chalik. from the Accord Physicians Urology Division answer your questions about enlarged prostate. These practicing surgeons were named America’s Top Urologists of 2009 and 2010.
Dr. Chalik, please tell our readers what BPH is and why it is dangerous?
At birth, the prostate is not large. At a certain point, it begins to grow gradually and stops after teenage years. After 35 years, however, the prostate begins to grow again, which often leads to the development of BPH. That is why the American Urological Association recommends that all men over 45 years undergo an annual urological examination.
Because of the unique anatomical structure of the prostate gland, any changes to its state are immediately reflected in the quality of urination. In the event of failure, treatment can prevent serious complications such as acute and chronic retention of urine in the bladder, bleeding when urinating, urinary tract infections (cystitis, prostatitis, pyelonephritis), stone formation, and chronic renal failure.
How can a man know that he has BPH (enlarged prostate)?
Identifying the presence of an enlarged prostate is not difficult. It can be identified through the prevalence of the following symptoms:
- Increased frequency and difficulty urinating (especially frequent urination at night)
- The weakening of the stream of urine
- Feeling of incomplete emptying of the bladder
- Difficulty holding in urine
These symptoms emerge gradually, often growing and worsening. For a long time, an enlarged prostate (non-cancerous) may be present as a result of any one of these hardly noticeable symptoms. Such conditions are often mistakenly blamed on age, stress and other factors, which is absolutely not the case.
Dr. Raykhman, how do you treat these conditions at your clinic?
Before starting treatment, it is important to correctly diagnose the patient. We’ve worked hard to equip our clinic with everything necessary for this. In determining the diagnosis, we use the most modern and accurate diagnostic tools available.
Our accredited radiology center, equipped with the latest ultrasound devices and computer tomography, lets us take pictures of the prostate for the suspected tumor.
We have our own laboratory and certified pathologist, who can quickly and accurately study PSA (prostate specific antigen) in blood and, if necessary, take a painless biopsy (sampling of cells) of the prostate. This eliminates the possibility of prostate cancer, which is identical with BPH (enlarged prostate) symptoms.
The New York Urologic Institute offers a wide range of possibilities for the treatment of BPH including applied therapeutic and physiotherapeutic methods. Dr. Chalik and I constantly participate in special seminars, which help us keep track of the most effective drugs for the treatment of urological diseases.
You only use a therapeutic method of treatment?
We offer many different methods of treatment. Sometimes, medicinal methods do not produce desired results. In those cases, we use laser, microwave or radiation therapy.
Unfortunately, not all patients chose to seek medical attention at an early stage, allowing the tumor to reach a fairly large size. In such cases, one has to resort to surgery: resection or open transurethral prostatectomy. We perform many surgical procedures without having to open anything up. We use many different tools to manipulate the urogenital tract without the need for incisions. Using these methods significantly reduces post-operative trauma, both physical and psychological, while also minimizing blood loss.
Many of our surgical procedures involve the use of anesthesia and antibiotics. This, coupled with our automated sterilization of surgical instruments minimizes pain and risk of infection. We perform operations without the need for costly, and often lengthy hospitalization. After receiving quality care at our clinic, patients go home and enjoy life.
What would you say to men suffering from BPH?
We have vast experience in the treatment of urological diseases in both men and women. Our sole aim is to restore the health of the patient as soon as possible, making the treatment comfortable, efficient and painless. We recommend that all men be more attentive to their health, and seek professional medical help when symptoms first develop.
